History

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing.

In 1922 Mikao Usui developed his style of Reiki practice called Usui Reiki Ryoho, acknowledging the existence of other styles. Because of the conditions in Japan after World War II, and the fact that Hawayo Takata brought Reiki to the Western Civilization, Usui Reiki became the predominate form of Reiki practiced throughout the world. It is known of the many different Reiki styles present in the world, this way people always choose the style that resonates the best with them.

Reiki is in continuous development and, regardless of the style, its importance and similitude is that it heals. It helps to heal ourselves and others. There is no harm, anyone can learn it, and there are no prerequisites.

What is Reiki?

The awareness that an unseen energy flows through all living things and directly affects the quality of a person’s health has been part of the wisdom of many cultures since ancient times. This life energy goes by many names: Chi in China, Ki in Japan, and Prana in India. The ancient Hawaiians called it Ti or Ki. It is also known as the vital life force or the universal energy, and science refers to it as biofield energy. When your life energy is low, or there are restrictions of flow, it is more difficult to deal with stress and you are more vulnerable to illness. When your life energy is strong, and flowing freely, you feel energized and deal with stress more easily, you are less prone to get sick. Reiki is a technique that increases a person’s supply of life energy.

What is a Session Like?

Reiki is administered through the hands of a Reiki practitioner; the practitioner acts only as a channel for the Universal energy to travel through the practitioner and into the recipient. The recipient is lying fully clothed on a massage table, sitting on a chair, or even in a distance modality.

A session usually lasts between an hour, and an hour and a half, although shorter sessions are also possible. The Reiki practitioner places his or her hands at locations around the head and shoulders, the abdomen, the legs, feet and sometimes on the back. Tissue is not manipulated. The practitioner’s hands are simply held at each location, lightly touching or slightly away from the body. Reiki energy flows through the practitioner’s hands and into the recipient’s body and energy field.

A Reiki session feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that surrounds and fills the recipient with feelings of relaxation, peace and well-being that also promote healing. This technique also removes blockages, meaning sometimes there might be feelings of discomfort within comfort. Imagine peeling an onion, becoming aware of all emotions and sensations and letting them flow. We are human beings.

Hydration of our body is always important. If you are not used to drinking water, please make sure to do so after a Reiki session, to help to keep body’s hydration and to help with the release of anything not needed within the body.

Benefits?

Reiki energy promotes unblockages of energy within our bodies, allowing our muscles to relax. It increases blood flow, which in turn quickens the healing process of the body. Reiki also promotes psychological healing, including release of anger, fear, worry, sadness and other unhealthy feelings, replacing them with self-worth, joy, love and confidence. Patients heal faster, reduce stress and improve overall mental attitude. Practitioners and clients report it has helped with stress, headaches, insomnia, upset stomach, sprains and other minor conditions. Occasionally, miraculous results are reported.
